Cleaning Off My Desk

This could be the most ridiculous blog I’ve posted!  I’m cleaning out a little nook area of my desk where I put notes I’ve written.  Turns out, they’ve been in there for quite some time, as there are passwords written on yellow post-it notes for accounts that have been closed for years.  Hmmmm!  It’s about time, I’d say.

Messy and cluttered desk

I’ve had a glimpse into my own heart as I’ve read and mused over notes I’ve written to myself.  Today, I’m simply sharing those notes, scripture verses, and quotes that still speak to my heart, remind me of something precious, or make me chuckle.

Here goes:

“The greatest virtue is courage, because it makes all the other virtues possible.”  Winston Churchill

“In the midst of the modern-day church, God would raise up Elijahs who are zealous for him.  Laodicea means the “rights of the people”.

“A scar will always mark you, but never let it define you.”

“Faith is deliberate confidence in the character of God whose ways you may not understand at the time.”  Oswald Chambers

Both blessing and suffering come from the Lord.  See Lamentations 3:38

“Laments make up more than one-third of the psalms. The contrast between Israel’s hymnbook and the church’s says a great deal about our failure to acknowledge suffering………The psalms of lament grant us permission to express to God our honest questions, doubts, griefs and despair.”  Randy Alcorn – If God is Good

“My faith has no bed to sleep upon but omnipotence.”  Samuel Rutherford

“The great mistake made by most of the Lord’s people is in hoping to discover in themselves that which is to be found in Christ alone.”  A. W. Pink

“God does not play dice with the universe.”  Albert Einstein

“True science discovers God waiting behind every door.”  Pope Pius XII

5 Steps to Happiness by T.D. Jakes:

  1. Own your own happiness.
  2. Challenge your story.
  3. Enjoy the journey.
  4. Make relationships count – #1. your relationship with God and #2. with yourself.
  5. Balance work with play.

“You are not here merely to make a living.  You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”  Woodrow Wilson

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.  But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”  Matthew 6:14-15

“There is a sacredness in tears.  They are not the mark of weakness, but of power.  They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues.  They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.”

“All men should strive to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why.”  James Thurber

I was discussing how to write a limerick with my youngest one day, quickly jotted one down, and rediscovered it today:

“We hired a lawyer named Jed.

He really got into my head.

He made me believe him

With smooth talk of problems

And spouting of hot air and dread.”  L. K. Adams

Ha!

And lastly:

“Do not lurk like a thief near the house of the righteous, do not plunder their dwelling place; for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.”  Proverbs 24:15-16

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”  Lamentations 3:22-23

“Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”  James 1:12

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.  And he who searches our hearts, knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.”  Romans 8:26-27
